Health & Fitness for Employees
Employees want a convenient way to set and track personal fitness goals to improve their health and well-being.
This project focused on relaunching an outdated Health & Fitness app for a company’s employees. It took around 6 months with regular team meetings, involving design, development, and feedback loops with the client.
The Problem
The goal of this project was to enhance the company’s existing Health & Fitness app, which was outdated and lacking in functionality. The app’s purpose was to encourage employees to maintain healthier lifestyles, which would improve overall productivity and well-being. However, users faced issues with the app’s navigation, limited tracking options, and lack of engagement features.
Our main question became: How can we create an engaging, user-friendly health app that supports employees in achieving their fitness goals?
Exploration
We began by analyzing the old app’s structure and features, identifying key areas for improvement. Some existing features, such as interval training, running time predictions, and BMI calculation, were useful and needed to be retained. However, they required a design update for better usability and integration with the new app layout.
We introduced an animation for the opening screen to give users a welcoming experience, with the logo appearing first, followed by the "HealthCoach" text. A short intro was also added for first-time users, explaining the four main app categories and the scoring system. Users could define their goals or skip this step, which would leave the dashboard empty but prompt them to set goals later.
For further insights, we studied current fitness apps and incorporated new features like customized challenges, notification reminders, and score tracking. The goal was to boost user engagement through personalized challenges and rewards, making the app feel both motivational and easy to use.
Scoping
The core objective was to offer employees a user-friendly app that encouraged them to set and achieve personal fitness goals. Here are some of the questions we considered during scoping:
How should the app handle goal setting for users who skip it initially?
In the "mehr" tab you are able to define individual goals for users, allowing them to set goals anytime.
What notification types will help users stay on track?
We created two types of notifications: reminders for uncompleted goals and congratulatory messages for goal achievements, both of which added points to the user’s score.
How can we make goal tracking and scoring engaging yet straightforward?
We included a "Score Screen" showing accumulated points, with a detailed view by category, so users could easily see their progress and accomplishments.
How should challenges be designed to encourage long-term engagement?
Users could set their own challenges with regular notifications. Completing challenges added score points, encouraging consistency.
User Interface
We kept the company’s vibrant and shiny color palette, using it throughout the app to create a lively and motivational atmosphere. The bright colors gave the interface an energetic feel that aligned well with the app’s focus on health and fitness, adding excitement to each interaction. We used these colors strategically to guide users’ attention to essential actions, such as setting goals, tracking progress, and starting challenges. Each category was color-coded, making navigation intuitive and helping users quickly locate different sections.
